Why Coaching in a Community Beats Going Solo

Posted on May. 27, 2026  /  President's Message  /  0

Alex Wallash,  President of the ICF Bay Area Chapter, recently spoke with Bill Mains, the Director of Events. Bill shared something that resonated deeply. For years, he operated as a coach in complete isolation. Even after becoming ICF-certified, he didn't know about the support structures, the training opportunities, or the community of coaches who shared his mission.

Then he discovered our Bay Area chapter and "it felt like coming home." In the conversation, Bill shares why building a coaching community matters and what we're doing to bring Bay Area coaches together in meaningful ways.

The Isolation Trap for Solo Coaches

If you've ever felt isolated in your coaching practice, you don't have to stay that way.

Take Bill's story as an example. When he reached out to SFBAC, he learned about the resources the chapter provided and utilized them. Then, something shifted in him.

  • He gained perspective on his practice. Other coaches offer fresh insights on challenges you're facing, helping you see blind spots and new possibilities.
  • He accelerated his learning. Instead of figuring everything out alone, you benefit from the collective wisdom of experienced practitioners who've been where you are.
  • He renewed his motivation. When you're surrounded by people who share your mission and values, it reinforces why you do this work in the first place.
  • He operated more effectively. Collaboration reduces redundancy and helps you focus your energy where it matters most.

This is why Bill jumped at the chance to serve on the SFBAC board as Director of Events. Now he's not just planning events. He's building neighborhoods, specifically "five neighborhoods" reflecting our five geographic areas.

Starting in May and June 2026, Bill’s team is launching events specifically designed to bring coaches together for connection and learning in their local areas. You don't have to operate in isolation anymore. Your community is here, and we're building neighborhoods where you can connect with other coaches and collaborate on making a bigger impact.

Simply pick one (or more) and attend. Which neighborhood will you join? We look forward to seeing you there.
